Thunderbolt is basically an external PCIe port, so cleaner delivery and less overhead than USB. For some strange reason nobody knows about this drive. It is the fastest bus-powered Thunderbolt drive on the market.

Speeds will come back when GC has completed, but they will never be consistent. You will see it dip into the 100's or 200's over time. I've watched the OWC videos and I'm not up for installing an SSD. If my thunderbolt port had been free (I use it for my archive on a Promise Pegasus), I would have tried the thunderbolt external SSD mentioned earlier in this thread. It's a fiddly operation, with many tales of people causing irreparable damage to their logic boards. I recently did the HD/SDD swap in my own 2011 mini. Also files will open and save and faster - this should offer a noticeable improvement in your situation (large files in photoshop). This is great if you do a lot of booting and launching (I don't). You will boot faster, and applications will launch faster. Replacing the internal HD with an SSD has some positive effects. (My bottleneck is saving 16bit PSDs out of ACR - I think a fast quadcore processor is the only thing that will speed that up.) Like the original poster, I'd be interested in a 100% increase in speed for a $1,000 investment, but unfortunately, I don't think that's possible. I use a 2011 mac mini with 16GB ram (2.7ghz, i7 dual core, AMD graphics). It would be helpful if the original poster explained which aspects of image editing are slow on his current set-up.
